Panama Sport Fishing Trips - Pinas Bay
Tropic Star Lodge
The word "Panama" means "an abundance of fish". Piñas Bay truly lives up to this meaning. In the waters around Tropic Star Lodge, you can catch Dolphin, Yellowfin Tuna, Roosterfish, Cubera Snapper, Grouper, Amberjack, Rainbow Runner, and Mackerel. We catch a few "Pacific" tarpon (which made the trip through the canal) every year in the 50 to 100 pound range. Black Marlin, Blue Marlin and Sailfish, can be caught “right outside our front door," making this a truly unique location. THERE HAVE BEEN MORE I.G.F.A. WORLD RECORDS BROKEN IN PINAS BAY THAN ANYWHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD -- over 250 World Records!
Tropic Star Lodge holds over fifty world records at the present time! Most of the records at the Lodge were taken on light and ultra light line -- which is what Piñas Bay is recognized for throughout the World! Also, recently we have recorded over 40 IGFA Junior Angler World Records! Many people fish Tropic Star Lodge to catch their first Black Marlin, Blue Marlin or Pacific Sailfish. Our crews can help you as much or as little as you require. We issue beautiful certificates for those who catch their first billfish at the lodge.
All species of billfish and non-billfish can be caught year-round in the pristine waters off Piñas Bay. The prime Black Marlin season runs from December into April. The Pacific Sailfish start moving in April through June. July brings another run of Marlin; many in the five hundred pound range. Most of our fishing is done six to fifteen miles offshore in calm waters. In late January and February the north wind brings the cooler water and tailing Marlin. That’s the only time it can get a bit bumpy. Our fleet of 31’ foot Bertram’s is the perfect boat for fishing at Piñas Bay.
Equipment: We furnish all of your equipment, which includes; Shimano Tiagra reels and Cape Fear rods from 20-50 lb. class. We have spinning rods and reels from the 12-20 lb. class. We do not furnish any fly fishing equipment. The best size fly rod to bring is 14 Wt. 9 foot rod for Sailfish and Dorado etc. You can use a 12 Wt., but a 14 Wt. will give you more backbone to lift a big fish to the surface. Any billfish fly should work; pink and white are good colors. Many like flies that are made of billfish hair, which is a type of fiber.
Tropic Star Lodge is a veritable paradise cut out of the side of a mountain at the edge of the Darien Jungle on the Pacific coast of Panama. The Lodge is situated 150 miles south of Panama City. It can only be reached by boat or plane, since there are no roads within a hundred miles. A charter plane lands on an airstrip in Piñas Bay. You then take a ten minute boat ride to Tropic Star Lodge. Our spacious cabins and rooms are air-conditioned, with a beautiful view of Piñas Bay. Each room has twin beds and private bath/dressing room areas. A king-size bed can be requested. The cabins have surrounding porches with chairs.
Each afternoon when the boats return to the Lodge, "fish stories" are swapped while guests relax in the fresh water swimming pool, or drink pina coladas and eat fish fingers or sushimi on the veranda overlooking the bay, or in the air-conditioned bar. Multi-course dinners, complete with wine, are served in the scenic bay-view dining room each evening. The chef prepares various specialties, such as Baked Alaska, Cherries Jubilee, black bean soup; fresh baked pies and bread, ceviche, and many more varied and delectable dishes. A fresh "catch of the day" is offered, as well as our regular main course selection.
